Discolored Water

What should I do if I have discolored water?
Please call the Columbia County Water Utility at 706-863-6928 and report it. The Water Utility will dispatch a crew to flush the lines in your area.

What causes discolored water?
The typical cause of discolored water in our system is manganese. Other factors, such as a water main breaks, may cause discolored water; please call the Water Utility if you see discolored water.

As water use increases in the spring/summer, the velocity of the water in the water lines increases. This increased velocity sometimes scours accumulated manganese from the pipe walls, creating discolored water.

Construction in an area may disturb the water lines, causing the release of accumulated manganese, which discolors the water.

Localized heavy water usages may also cause discolored water.
